Poetic Irony’s Vacation Turns Out Less Than Perfect

The other night I was talking to Poetic Irony about her recent vacation.

Me: “So how was your trip?”

Poetic Irony: “It was fun! You know, walked around, looked at stuff, and ate really good food.”

Me: “Sound like the perfect vacation.”

Poetic Irony: “Hooked up with a guy I met while traveling.”

Me: “What? You hooked up with a stranger? This is how every episode of Law & Order has ever started.”

Poetic Irony: “Calm down, he was in my tour group.”

The Rich History of Rubbers

Few inventions have been the subject of so much derision, praise and laughter as the condom.

Standing Up to Idiots: Responses and Reflections

Ever since I came out with my story about Mr. Idiot thinking he had the right to take off his condom and pull out my NuvaRing without consulting me, I have received numerous responses, all expressing varying degrees of disgust and disbelief that this kind of stuff does actually happen. The most interesting thing, however, is who I have been receiving responses from. A number of men have written me apologizing for their gender, asking me if I’m okay, and if there is anything they can do for me.

A few examples of responses I have gotten from men:

The title of the facebook post doesn't tell the whole story. But it says a lot:

The Contraception Learning Curve

Not everybody’s doing it: about half of U.S. women younger than 20 are sexually active. But among women who are having sex, younger women are more likely to experience an unintended pregnancy. What’s the deal?

First let’s look at the numbers. A new report shows that, compared to older women, sexually active women aged 15-19 are more than twice as likely to have an unintended pregnancy.

Please Mind the Birth Control Gap

The other day I got a call from Blue-eyed Girl.

Blue-eyed Girl: “My doctor just shamed me.”

Me: “Did you deserve it?”

Blue-eyed Girl: “Oh, I forgot I was talking to the Patron Saint of Tough Love.”

Me: “So that’s a yes.”

Story goes like this: Blue-eyed Girl had recently switched her birth control and had never gotten around to filling her new prescription. So she and G.I. Joe had condoms with them at all times. One night they went out drinking with friends and when they came home, discovered they didn’t have any left. However, being that they were both drunky pants, they decided it would be fine.

What's a Girl Got to Do to Get Birth Control?

The other night I was having dinner with Polly Pocket.

Me: “Sorry I didn’t call you back last night. I was on my way to a birthday party.”

Polly Pocket: “No problem. I was just calling to vent anyway.”

Me: “Is everything okay?”

Polly Pocket: “I’m in a fight with the pharmacy and my lady doctor for holding my birth control hostage.”

“Have you called in the FBI negotiator?” I giggled.

Polly Pocket: “We are not in the joking place about this.”

Me: “Oh, sorry. Okay, tell me what happened.”

The story goes like this:

It’s All Fun and Games Until You Lose a Condom in Your Vajayjay. . .

The other night I was talking to Polly Pocket. We were doing our work version of “Best Week Ever.” Basically you have thirty seconds to tell the other one what you are doing at work before you dive into the really important stuff . . . sex and gossip. In an effort to protect Polly Pocket’s identity, I won’t tell you what she was doing at work.

I was talking about how I was trying to find young adults to talk about some new research we had coming out called The Fog Zone.

Polly Pocket: “Do I have to drive with my brights on when I’m in the ‘The Fog Zone'?”

Seen On Twitter: #whateverhappenedto Condoms?

We were pleasantly surprised to see the trending topic #whateverhappenedto come up in our "Condoms" twitter feed today ("pleasantly" because we're glad people are discussing birth control--the bad news, I guess, is that the topic is people not using it!). Anyway, I couldn't resist choosing a few favorites to highlight for posterity. Here are my top 11 #whateverhappenedto condoms tweets (with commentary), in no particular order:
