Whoops! Birth Control You Can Use After Sex

There are lots of reasons the best laid plans for using birth control don’t work out:

I completely forgot to take my pill (!)…
I just didn’t have enough money to pay for the ring this month…
The condom broke….
We’d had some drinks and got carried away…

Something like this happens to most of us at some point. If you’ve had unprotected sex for any reason, you can still prevent pregnancy by using emergency contraception (EC). Some types of EC are also called ‘the morning after pill’, and all EC prevents pregnancy after sex.

Standing Up to Idiots: Responses and Reflections

Ever since I came out with my story about Mr. Idiot thinking he had the right to take off his condom and pull out my NuvaRing without consulting me, I have received numerous responses, all expressing varying degrees of disgust and disbelief that this kind of stuff does actually happen. The most interesting thing, however, is who I have been receiving responses from. A number of men have written me apologizing for their gender, asking me if I’m okay, and if there is anything they can do for me.

A few examples of responses I have gotten from men:

The Contraception Learning Curve

Not everybody’s doing it: about half of U.S. women younger than 20 are sexually active. But among women who are having sex, younger women are more likely to experience an unintended pregnancy. What’s the deal?

First let’s look at the numbers. A new report shows that, compared to older women, sexually active women aged 15-19 are more than twice as likely to have an unintended pregnancy.

Today's the "Back Up Your Birth Control" Day of Action!

Okay, so I confess I was excited to have an excuse to post a video of bunnies (below--found thanks to RHRealityCheck), but I'm even more excited about the Back Up Your Birth Control Campaign, coordinated by the National Institute for Reproductive Health, to raise awareness about emergency contraception (EC, a.k.a. the morning-after pill).

Prego Scare By Text Message

The first text message my young traveling companion got stopped her in the middle of our conversation.

It read: Hey. I have a big secret I cant tell u til monday tho. But its huge girl nd im scared.

My companion typed:

Ur prego??? Ahhhhhhh

My companion’s friend, whom I’ll call "Worried", came back: They tested me today nd they r gunna call to tell me if it was positive or negative on monday. Im sooo scared!

And so began a saga for my companion, a college freshman, that started last Thursday in my car and continued until late last night.

The first text from Worried arrived as we were driving south on I-95, headed to a conference to talk about, of all things, young people and sex.
